Practical insulation testing knowledge from an engineer who works with power systems every day.
Why This Site Exists
Insulation testing is one of the most important parts of electrical maintenance. But finding clear, practical information about it can be hard. Most resources are either too academic or too basic.
I built InsulationTesting.com to fill that gap. Every article here is written from real field experience. The goal is simple: help electricians, engineers, and technicians understand insulation testing and do it right.
Our mission is to make insulation testing knowledge accessible to everyone — from first-year apprentices to senior engineers running complex maintenance programs.
Meet the Author
Zakaria El Intissar Automation & Industrial Computing Engineer
I’m an automation and industrial computing engineer with over 12 years of hands-on experience in power system automation and electrical protection. I’ve spent my career working with the equipment and systems that this site covers — motors, transformers, cables, generators, protection relays, and SCADA systems.
I started InsulationTesting.com because I kept running into the same problem: technicians and junior engineers asking good questions about insulation testing but struggling to find straightforward answers. The information was scattered across thick manuals, academic papers, and manufacturer brochures. None of it was written the way a field engineer would explain it to a colleague.
That’s what this site aims to be — the explanation you’d get from an experienced colleague who knows the topic well and speaks plainly.

What You’ll Find Here
This site covers three main areas of insulation testing:
Testing Methods — How each test works, when to use it, and how to read the results. From basic spot readings to advanced polarization index and hi-pot tests.
Equipment & Tools — Honest reviews and comparisons of megohmmeters, hi-pot testers, and diagnostic instruments from brands like Megger, Fluke, and others.
Real-World Applications — Step-by-step procedures for testing motors, transformers, cables, generators, and switchgear. Written the way you’d actually do it on site.
You’ll also find guides on industry standards (IEC, IEEE, NFPA), safety procedures, and the latest trends in predictive maintenance and online monitoring.
Our Approach
Every article on this site follows a few simple rules:
Practical first — Theory is useful, but only when it helps you do the job better. We always connect concepts to real-world practice.
Plain language — Technical topics don’t need complicated writing. We explain things clearly without dumbing them down.
Accurate and up to date — Content is reviewed regularly and updated when standards, equipment, or best practices change.
No sponsored bias — Equipment reviews are based on real use, not paid partnerships. If something is good, we say so. If it’s not, we say that too.
